Introduction to 2004 Lenten Devotions…..
I think most western New Yorker’s will agree this has been a very long, cold, snowy, and gloomy winter. Cabin fever is running amuk. I can’t remember the last time I saw the sun or felt its warmth. Winter seems so full of dormancy and death. As I sit and gaze out my window, I can think of little else other than spring has to be just around the corner. With spring will come green grass and leaves, red-breasted robins, and flowers of all kinds, colors and fragrances. The sky will change from a gloomy gray to a warm blue and the sun will once again surround us with its warmth. For the Church, Lent is the season of spring. The gloom of winter gives way on Ash Wednesday to the promise of springtime. Spring slowly unfolds during Lent, buds gather their strength, flower poke their heads out of the earth, robin return, and winter’s dormancy gives way week by week to new life. As I think of the devotions on the following pages, I cannot help but think of them as buds on a tree or as flowers of the earth. Each has its on unique color and scent. Each draws us closer to the warmth of the Son and serves as a reminder that Easter is on the horizon. For 100 years, beginning in 1904, Grace Lutheran Church has celebrated the Season of Lent and 2004 promises to be the best one ever! Yours in Christ, Pastor Billy We have added a section for those who wish to incorporate journaling into their devotional time. Journals help us to grow in prayer and faith, as a tool to hope us better understand the Scripture and to bring us into a closer relationship with God. Each journal entry includes 3 things: - Gloria – a place to write thing you want to thank God for; Kyrie – a place to write down the concerns you have; and Notes – place for responses to the Scripture, questions you that need answering or want to research; or feelings you felt when you read the devotion. Please feel free to print a few, if you wish to use them, to assist you in a closer walk with Him! |
