League History – 25 Years Ago (1982)
In 1982 there were six teams in the league, which still played at South Park Baptist Church in Buffalo. Dave Rose was the League Director. Teams included:- Grace Lutheran, coached by Dick Brady and Bill Ernst, with Hank Kleinfelder being an assistant coach- St. Jude’s Episcopal, coached by Hank Pollinger and Bob McIvor- Salem Lutheran, coached by Mark Jentsch- South Park Baptist, coached by Mike Parker- United Presbyterian, coached by Gary Ersing- United Methodist, coached by Burke Glaser
Jamie Fortin of Salem Lutheran won the Director’s Sportsmanship Award. Jamie later became the scorer for the league for over ten years. James Hartigan as an All Star for Salem Lutheran. His brother Paul Hartigan is one of the 2007 financial partners of the league. Hank, in addition to being assistant coach, was responsible for the Officials committee. Mark, in addition to coaching, ran the Banquet committee.Grace Lutheran won the regular season championship on the last night of the regular season, when Bob Watkins scored with three seconds left in the game against United Methodist. Dan Strain and Karl Shoop, who both continue to be involved with the league, were players on the playoff championship Grace Lutheran team. In the championship game they combined for 20 points to help lead Grace to victory. United Methodist, led by Rick Hewitt’s 28 points and Rick Smardz’s 25 points, won the playoff championship. |
